This is how you get younger people to buy your bikes, judging by how many Bonnevilles and other retro Triumphs I see around. Less macho bullshit, and more gorgeous retro bikes. If they made a Sportster that looked like this, I’d be getting my motorcycle license tomorrow. To quote one of the comments on the video, “This guy gets Harley more than Harley does”.

Most younger people who are into bikes don’t have money for new Harleys or fake retro wannabes. That’s why we buy clapped out old bikes and build them into what we want.

No ITV stickers on the forks?
Huh....

This is true, but I still see mostly 50+ year olds on Harleys, and 20-30 somethings on Triumphs

From some light googling, that seems to be an inspection sticker of some kind?

Yes, in Galicia at least, it’s common for bikes without a windshield to stack their inspection stickers on the forks, and they look ridiculous. I think you’re exempted for two years when the vehicle is new, but that sticker will totally ruin the bike’s A E S T H E T I C
Plus, why no fake front plates on the fender? That would’ve looked cool

Um, is this not more or less what you’re asking for?

Yep, and Ducatis or KTM and BMW adventure bikes. Harley is stuck.. their bread and butter is slowly going away no matter what they do. But a line of beautiful Sportsters with modern engine tech might help...

I guess that’s as close as it gets, but that one looks like a new bike trying to evoke an old bike, rather than actually looking like an old bike.

But it’s better than Harley’s usual recipe of an old bike trying to look like a new bike that’s trying to look like an old bike.

You’re not wrong that is pretty decent looking, just not quite there yet

Of all their bikes, the Sportster is my favorite (not saying all that much), and is the first bike I ever actually shopped for. I was surprised at how relatively heavy the thing was, even with the smaller engine. I don’t think it needs much of a redesign, but certainly the company could champion it as a semi-practical choice, and the dealers treat it as a worthwhile offering instead of trying to push a larger bike covered with a thousand accessories.

really, the Sportster’s styling hasn’t changed that much. really the only way to make it look like an older one is change the headlamp fairing, switch to drum brakes, and make it more sloppily-assembled. I don’t see the current Sportster as any more of a “try-hard” than these:
though I think the Speedmaster is really nice, if I were to get a Bonneville I’d probably go with the more “standard” T120. Don’t need another cruiser, and the “Triumph Tax” is almost as big as the “Harley Tax.”

tbf their bikes aren’t that “old.” the Softails were just completely re-designed last year, the touring baggers in 2013, and the Sportster in 2004. they just kept the same styling to keep their core customer (aging Boomers) buying.

honestly they just recently started trying to make their offerings appear more modern...right as every other manufacturer is getting product out that fits with the latest trends of classic style standards/scramblers/cafe etc. Goes to show just how out of touch they are.
They raked when there was disposable income and boomers were buying. They thought that would sustain and didn’t do anything but double down on it. Now they are in trouble, and it’s trouble I don’t see ending. The product is pigeonholed to a group that largely doesn’t want anything but what it’s always been.
At the end of the day, when you look at what serious riders are on you’ll see very few HD’s.
